Dear News Of The Area,
IN his description of the latest round of sand replenishment on Jimmy’s Beach I was surprised that Council spokesman, Andrew Staniland, made no mention of the almost completed sand transfer project which will pump sand from the Winda Woppa stockpile to the Jimmys Beach hotspot.

Almost four years ago Great Lakes Council announced the receipt of a $993,000 grant under the State government’s Coastal Program to construct the sand transfer system. The system could be quickly implemented to enable routine renourishment as well as emergency transfer in the event of storm erosion. Since that time sand has continued to be transferred by relatively inefficient and expensive truck/excavator programs.
From memory, the current program is the third involving trucks hauling along the beach.
As I understand it, the long-awaited sand transfer system is finally almost operable. It is unfortunate that the most recent renourishment works could not be delayed for a couple of months to take advantage of the far more efficient transfer system.
