The heat returned today but a light sea breeze assisted the comfort of 47 bowlers competing in the Wednesday Nominated Triples competition.
The winners today came from the second game on the synthetic green where, Bob Weir, Col Amos and Mark Hair recorded a +23.
On the grass green the team of; Rob Young, Ross Barry and Danny Johnson were the winners with a score of 19.
The lucky draw going to Col Walton and Greg Smith!
It is somewhat ironic that after nearly 6 months of dry that afternoon storms were predicted for the first round of the Newcastle District Pennant competition.
The predictions were accurate with the First State National Grade 4 game being washed out at Karuah.
It might have been an omen as all teams were trailing Karuah when rain stopped play.
At home the Grade 6 players were challenging the Wallsend Diggers side but were forced from the green due to lightening.
The rain soon followed and play called off.
Two Grade 6 teams were in front before the break.
Grade 7 playing away at Wallsend managed to complete their match, with the exception of 1 end, before torrential rain ceased play.
Grade 7 this year is composed of some seasoned players combining with some Pennant ‘rookies.
Winning away is never easy but the Grade 7 side managed the feat winning 55-51 and taking 9 out of the 10 points on offer.
The final of the Club Minor Singles was played today in perfect sunshine.
Col Saillard was taking on Ron Rowe.
Col maybe graded as a grade 4 player and Ron a grade 7 but the difference was not that apparent in the quality of the match these two players produced.
Maybe it was the metronomic delivery that Colin has that might have been the difference but all agreed that some very fine bowls were played today with Colin taking the title 31-18.
Congratulations to all the players who competed.
This title is proving each year that it is very hard to win.
