Who would have thought that five simple words muttered in the Bulahdelah Butchery would create a buzz of excitement across the Nation?
That’s exactly what happened last week when the words ‘I Wake up with Today’ brought one lucky lady a cash jackpot of $70,000.
Amongst the steaks and chops at Barry Brothers Butchery, Lee Welsh from North Curl Curl in Sydney couldn’t believe her luck.
“I was absolutely stocked, I hit the jackpot,” she said.
“I’ve been entering for 15 years and finally pulled it off.”
Broadcast live across the country, the hosts of Channel Nine’s Today Show Karl Stefanovic and Lisa
Wilkinson excitedly mentioned Bulahdelah many times during the segment.
Lee jokingly laughed when she said, “I’ve put Bulahdelah back on the map.”
Owner of Bulahdelah’s Riverside Café Stacey Brown, was standing next to Lee when the phone call came.
“She was kneeling on the ground crying and screaming $70,000,” Stacey said.
“I was very excited for her.”
Lee and her partner Craig McDonald, who worked on the Bulahdelah Bypass a few years ago, said they always stop in for the National Award Winning Sausages when passing through the town.
“I was picking up a 10 kilogram order of pistachio and pork sausages when I got the phone call,” Lee told News Of The Area.
“I’d ordered them a month ago to take up to Hat Head for Craig’s 50th Birthday.”
Channel Nine’s cash giveaway competition requires participants to answer a call by saying ‘I Wake up with Today’ within five rings.
Always prepared, there was no way Lee was ever going to forget the words confidently stating, “I always answer the phone with I Wake up with Today.”
Celebrating for many days after the big win, Lee said the sausages were, “Beautiful, we have all them the time.”
