AFTER reading an article in News Of The Area Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast took part in the Greater Bank’s March Community Support Programme in which three Mid North Coast community organisations compete in a public ballot to share in $3,000 of prize money.

Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast is a local group of breast cancer survivors and supporters who gain strength and wellbeing through the exercise of dragon boat paddling and camaraderie within the group.

For many breast cancer patients the change of pace after treatment can be challenging with the emphasis changing from the medical routine to the reality of rebuilding life, health, fitness and confidence, a major aim of Dragons Abreast is to fill the gap that is left after treatment is over.

The Greater Bank program allows the community to vote for one of three not for profit or charitable organisations from the Mid North Coast region that they feel is most worthy, and the most popular receives $2000, and the other two community groups get $500 each.

The group received over 7,000 votes and while they only just missed winning the major prize the impressive result was a testimony to the support the group enjoys within the community.

“To receive over just 7,000 votes was an amazing result and we feel very proud of the community support for our group.

“We aim at raising breast cancer awareness – this programme has helped us to do that.

“We thank the Greater Bank for this generous programme and gratefully accept the cheque for $500,” said Club Coordinator, Lynn Chapple.

The Club paddles on the second Saturday of the month on the Bellinger River at Mylestom and at other times with the Coffs Coast Dragon Boat Club.

To find out more about the Club and dragon boat paddling, members will be on hand at the Senior’s Day at the Harbourside Markets next Sunday, April 18.

More information about Dragons Abreast Coffs Coast can be found on their Facebook page or phone 0411 084 917.

Along with getting fit and having fun, the Club is focused on raising breast cancer awareness and showing survivors that they can still lead a full life after treatment.
