The President of the Pink Ladies, Helen Mears, told News Of The Area that last financial year the Pink Ladies were able to donate an amazing total of $132,793 worth of equipment.

These funds came mainly from selling sandwiches, coffee and hot food to staff and hospital visitors from the coffee shop.

Before March, the gift shop sold a variety of items including donations of knitting, such as baby clothes and Ms Mears is hopeful that it will be able to be reopened soon.

Ms Mears was motivated to volunteer at the hospital by a friend 40 years ago, when her daughter began pre-school.

Back then, volunteers worked on two floors and in the maternity section.

The Pink Ladies’ 70 members devoted almost 23,000 hours to the hospital last financial year.

As well as operating the coffee and gift shops, volunteers visit wards with a trolley selling lollies, chips, magazines and newspapers and look after flowers that patients have received.

Ms Mears said the Pink Ladies will be challenged when the new section is opened.

However, she is looking forward to operating a new, larger coffee shop in the new section.

She is also looking forward to catching up with her fellow volunteers at a Christmas lunch.

When asked about her motivation for volunteering, Ms. Mears said, “I just love the hospital and all the people there.”
