A man is in custody and inquires are continuing after the alleged assault and robbery of two elderly men in Lidcombe.
About 12.15am today (Saturday 30 August 2014), two men in their seventies were walking along John Street when they noticed they were being followed by four to six youths.
When the men turned into Yarram Street, the group approached them.
It will be alleged the youths punched both men in the face, and stole their wallets and other items before fleeing the area.
Police responded quickly to the incident, and began pursuing the youths into nearby Chadwick Reserve and Lidcombe Railway Station.
A number of people were arrested at both locations, and questioned by police before being released pending further investigations.
An 18-year-old man was arrested and taken to Auburn Police Station. He remains in custody, and police anticipate he will be charged in relation to the robbery.
The investigation continues, and police from Flemington Local Area Command are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
In particular, they would like to speak with a number of youths seen in Yarram Street at the time of the incident. They are described as being of Pacific Islander/Maori appearance.
The two elderly men were treated at the scene for minor facial injuries. They did not require hospitalisation
