IN a wonderful nod to the high quality of secondary Public Education on offer for our young people, a group of Irrawang students and their teacher have taken out state awards at a distinguished awards ceremony as the only comprehensive state school in New South Wales to win a place at the 2016 Arthur Phillip Fieldwork Awards ceremony.
Two Irrawang Year 10 groups took out first and second place in the Dr Maurine Goldston-Morris Civic and Citizenship Award.
The first placed group was Jessie Dennett, Phebe Farrawell, Dakota Gordon and Mitchell, with a synopsis of: Sustainable school project.
Their proposal was to install a water tank at Irrawang High School.
The group applied to the P&C for funding to complete the project and were further supported by Hunter Irrigation and Water Supplies at Raymond Terrace, who donated three 556l tanks.
They were installed on the school farm.
The second placed group was Jacobi Patrick, Marienus Plooy and Hagan Zak with a synopsis of: Sustainable school project to expand the paper Recycling in the school.
Two Irrawang High Year 10 groups also took out the highly commended awards for their projects in the Global Education, Fieldwork and Research Stage 5 competition
The first group, James Foster, Jacob Irlam, Chloe Jenner, Georgia Sulis and Telikia Willis-Monk, put together a project that was created with the synopsis: Reducing Food miles at Irrawang High.
The second group, Emma Ackers, Chloe Barnes, Georgia Casumaro, Thomas Mildren and Nicholas Oswald, submitted a project with the synopsis: Sustainability at Irrawang High School with solar power.
Caitlin Ping, Year 7, took out first place in the Global Education, Fieldwork and Research Stage 4 competition, with a Synopsis: Olympic National Park in USA and its classification as a biosphere reserve and world heritage site.
Teacher Mrs Catherine Donnelly also took out an award, winning the Dr Maurice Goldston-Morris Teacher Award.
School representative Lue Fagan told News Of The Area, “We are so proud of these students for their hard work and commitment to their projects.”
“They have done themselves, and our school, proud.”
