From 7.30am on Saturday, 27 July until 7.30am on Sunday, 28 July the Imugi Taekwondo Club will run a continual sparring session with five representatives.
The sparrers have taken a simple, if not exhausting, idea to their fundraising.
For 24 hours the five martial artists will be available to spar members of the community.
Tony Gillespie, Kelly O’Brien, Simon Tuppurainen, Shaun Whittaker, and Nicky Blanch will complete 420 rounds each.
Members of the public are invited and welcome to attend the sparring session.
The group is raising money to finalise a documentary that follows the lives of young girls through their martial arts journey.
Investigative journalist Ms Jess Hill interviewed the female students as part of her new book and is currently working on the documentary said in a statement, “Watching these young women train in martial arts and talk openly about issues of consent, abuse and self-love was one of the most incredible things I did while writing my book.”
Ms Hill’s recently published best-selling book, “See What You Made Me Do” deals with issues of violence against women.
Ms Kelly O’Brien told News Of The Area, “This is a cause close to our hearts.”
“The documentary is about empowering young women to be confident and feel safe in the world.”
“Something that we strive to achieve for all our students.”
“We just want to do our best in getting this message out to as many people as possible.”
“Martial Arts is about as much about personal growth as it is about physical skills.”
The documentary at the centre of the fundraiser follows the lives of young girls through their martial arts journey.
It faces the truths, myths and misconceptions that exist around martial arts and most importantly the benefits for young women.
This is an affordable fundraiser, with each round of sparring costing between $1 and $3 for each 3 minute timeslot.
Mr Tony Gillespie from Imugi Taekwondo Club said, “We’d like to encourage all our Martial Arts friends and family from everywhere to come along and join in.”
“No style barriers, or even experience required, everyone is welcome to just jump in and have some fun.”
