LONG-TIME residents of Medowie will take a step back in time when walking through the doors of the Medowie Sports Centre this week.

The renovated and modernised Squash Courts were officially opened, after being closed for close to twenty years.

The original structures of the old courts were kept, with the modern inclusion of high quality glass back walls and a viewing deck above both of the courts from the second level of the sport centre.

The original hardwood floors were saved, stripped back, sanded and finished, giving a sentimental aspect to the new-look courts.
The club, until now, has been playing at Raymond Terrace and Cardiff, but will now have alternate week home games at the Medowie Sports Centre courts on a Thursday night.

The Medowie Squash Club plays in the Newcastle Squash Association competition.

A junior competition and coaching will be organised, with Aaron Fyfe on board as Coach,

Aaron is an under 17s National Juniors Champion, and was part of the 2008 Australian Junior team for the World Men’s Championships.

Aaron told News Of The Area, “Squash is a fantastic sport to get the kids involved in, getting them fit and active whilst having a whole lot of fun.”

“Our classes and comp will be centred around making sport, and the game of squash, fun.”

Times and days for junior squash will be booked according to demand.

Steve Bentley, manager of Medowie Sports Centre, told News Of The Area, “This is the start of a big adventure for us here, and the first of many new openings to come before the new Medowie Sports Centre is finished.”

“These courts are for the community.”

We want to see people meeting up for a game, maybe a bite to eat afterwards, and using this fantastic community facility as great meeting place,” he said.

The courts can be hired by schools and sporting groups, or individuals and small groups.

The sports centre has racquets available for hire, and purchase, as well as balls, goggles and grip tape.

To book a game from Monday to Sunday, please see Steve at the new front counter of Medowie Sports Centre, or book online at www.medowiesportscentre.com.au.
