Eileen Gilliland, CEO of Destination Port Stephens, is mindful that the restaurant and tour businesses are still unable to operate at full capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions, but believes there are plenty of positives for local tourism. “The summer holidays are peak season every year but this year we had a good lead up through November and December and the peak is going longer into January. “There are still a lot of people here when normally it slows down around 10 January this year we are seeing visitation stronger right through January,” she said. Ms Gilliland is looking forward to a positive peak again for the Easter break. “With most of the borders not open we are getting a real boost from domestic visitation, a lot of people are visiting that haven’t been here before and we are hoping to see repeat visitation in the long run,” she said.
