Several schools from across Port Stephens competed in the event, including (but not limited to), St. Philip’s Christian College Port Stephens, Bobs Farm Public School, Tanilba Bay Public School, Hunter River High School and Raymond Terrace Public School. On the day, there were three disciplines, those being Robocup soccer, on-stage novice (formerly dance) and rescue robotics. Raymond Terrace Public School participated in all three disciplines, with all students in 6BW competing and achieving success in their first year, with the “Raymond Terrace Rockets” advancing through to the finals. Raymond Terrace Public School Year 6 teacher Bernadette van de Wijgaart told News Of The Area, “Our students had a thoroughly rewarding learning experience and were able to study the design of other student’s robots and gain valuable insight.” “These opportunities are there for schools to take advantage of. “We now have the wonderful support of Dr Aaron Wong and The University of Newcastle, as we move our students forward, professional partnerships cannot be underestimated in 21st Century teaching,” she said. On the day students competed from both Public Education and private sector schools. It was through a training day hosted by St.Phillip’s in late 2017, in which both Bob’s Farm Public and Raymond Terrace Public attended, that led to the wonderful learning experience and competition interest.
