Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club News

Winners of the Club Championship Triples competition for 2021 Peter Gurney, Jeff Baker and Greg Brown with the runners-up Stu Dorahy, Dennis Longman and Graeme Reynolds.

IT is a bit of a case of “where were we before we were interrupted?” at the Tea Gardens Men’s Bowling Club.

The first day back for Wednesday bowls, after weeks of fine Spring weather, was greeted with a washout, another case of Murphy’s Law at play.

Sunday bowlers were the first on to the greens with a good turnout on a bright sunny day on 19 September.

Twenty-two players enjoyed 3 rinks of Triples and one game of Pairs.

A great time was had by all, and it was good to welcome two new players to the Club, Ron Berczelly and Craig Bengston.

Wednesday bowls finally returned on 22 September, and even with some very ordinary weather 43 bowlers managed two games of 12 end Triples.

The draw for the winners was done by the bar staff and the results for both AM and PM was “lowest winning score”.

The morning winners on 11points were Terry Munright, Ron Webster and Danny Johnson.

The afternoon winners on 12 points were Graeme Watkins, Peter Gurney and Keith Smith.

The Garden eatery voucher was won by Keith Smith.

Before lockdown, the Club Triples Championship had reached the semi-final stage and organisers were anxious to complete the event before any further ‘disasters’ intervened.

Both the semi-finals and the final were played today.

Due to a medical episode one team had to withdraw leaving the team of Peter Gurney, Jeff Baker and Greg Brown going through to the final.

In the remaining game the team of Graeme Reynolds, Dennis Longman and Stu Dorahy played Scott Fitzalan, Ross Barry and Danny Johnson.

The Stu Dorahy side held just a few too aces and ran out winners 26-14.

The final was played in the afternoon with the Stu Dorahy team playing the Greg Brown side for the title.

It was a great final with neither side gaining any ascendency.

At the 11th end scores were locked at 11-11 and this was to be the case when the game reached the penultimate end with the scores tied again at 20-20.

The Greg Brown side managed to have three shots in the head on the last end and Stu Dorahy was left with just one shot to play to salvage the match.

His drive just missed and the Club Championship Triples crown went to the team of Pater Gurney, Jeff Baker and Greg Brown.

Congratulations to them and to all those that competed.

Thanks also to the Umpires and to greenkeeper Peter Thornton on presenting a beautiful playing surface for the players.
