THE fate of the Mambo Wanda Wetlands may have taken a step in what the community feels is the right direction after a motion from Cr Abbott calling for the land to be acquired by Council.

The move by Council requires the NSW Government to fund all Councils expenses plus the cost of an updated management plan.

Cr Abbott said, “I applaud my fellow Councillors for agreeing to step in and fix this Mambo mess, we will now approach the NSW Government requesting a funding guarantee so ratepayers are not out of pocket,” Cr Abbott said.

Catherine Cusack Member of the Legislative Council was at Mambo Wetlands this week to meet with the community, she told News Of The Area, “As Council has the 175 Hectare reserve, they have the legalities on their side to buy back the land.”

She believes that some of the problems faced in acquiring the site relate to the rights of landholders, in Australia the Government cannot just acquire private land without good legal reasons.

“The application made for the funding has been sent to the Premier for consideration and I am appreciative that Council voted unanimously on the motion,” she said.

Both Catherine Cusack and Jamie Abbott applauded the community for their passion and activism.

Irene Jones of WetCon, who has taken to creating her own protest clothing in support of the fight for the Mambo Wanda Wetlands, told News Of The Area, “We are about half way there with the signatures to have the matter debated in parliament and we will keep working on saving this land for the community.”

While there are no timelines for this type of request Cr Abbot expressed her Christmas Wish for an early Christmas Gift for Mambo Wetlands.
