GREAT Lakes Aged Care owes its existence to a generous and committed community and, after more than a quarter of a century, that same community is invited back to celebrate the milestone achievement.
The celebration will be held at Bulahdelah Bowling Club on Tuesday 8 August commencing at 6.30pm, and will acknowledge the support and involvement of the district community over the past 25 years.
The event will also officially recognise and welcome the transition to Anglican Care, and all adult members of the community who have had some connection with the nursing home are invited to attend.
The function is being hosted by Anglican Care, their Directors and Chief Executive Officer, and members of their executive team will be in attendance.
They are keen to establish a presence in our community and are looking forward to meeting the people of the Bulahdelah district.
Great Lakes Aged Care (GLAC) was opened in 1991 to care for frail and aged residents in Bulahdelah and surrounding areas.
“There was definitely a need,” GLAC Director Kay Smith said.
“The hospital at that time dealt with acute care and it was becoming increasingly difficult for them to provide aged care, so it was decided to take on the challenge of establishing a nursing home.”
The original 40-bed home was established with the assistance of significant community fundraising.
“The community fundraising and practical assistance from local businesses was amazing,” Kay said.
“Raffles, cake stalls, trivia nights and bus trips – people got in and helped where they could.”
Kay, and fellow Director Judy Newman, have been compiling a growing list of people who have been involved with the nursing home over the years.
“However, it is impossible to provide a complete list of all those who have contributed and we are trusting that word about the celebration will get out through people’s contacts,” Kay said.
“We are hoping that many people who have had any connection to the Nursing Home will choose to join us at this very special function.”
