In 2018, the bell was stolen and the bell tower was destroyed in the process.

A police investigation followed.

The bell was found in a laneway the following day by a local resident.

It is assumed the weight of the bell, made of a bronze with high tin content, made it impossible for the thief to carry it very far without fear of being caught, so abandoned it.

Mr Clifford Johnson from the Anglican church told News Of The Area, “The bell holds sentimental value for the Church community and was a significant loss for the town folk.”

“The bell had been donated by the NSW Board of Fire Commissioners celebrating 60 years of service to the Cessnock Brigade and also for many years of service to the local church by Warden Edward Armstrong while a resident of Karuah.”

With volunteers, Mr Michael Rapa, Mr Johnson, and Mr Michael McGirk a new tower has been constructed and the bell restored to its rightful place in the last week.

  1. Good work boys. I’m so happy for you all.
Hard to imagine anyone would need to damage Bell or Tower. All the Best to The Saint Columbus Community
