The Youth Week 2018 theme of “Unity through Diversity” rang true, with children of all ages coming together to celebrate.
The event was hosted and run by the enthusiastic and dedicated guys at UP&UP, a Newcastle based organisation that works to engage young people and the wider community in creative arts projects, with the aim of promoting self-expression, well-being and more inclusive communities.
One of the parents in attendance with children of varying ages was Kaylene Staader, who told News Of The Area, “The kids had a go at spray painting art, decorating an old vinyl record each, and decorating one of the ramps at the skatepark.”
“They learnt how to scratch by the DJ, followed by a sausage sizzle.”
“They had lots of fun on their scooters and playing basketball and making new friends, it was a great day for the kids of Medowie to come together, we definitely need more events like this,” she said.
Bec, Mother of three scooter-mad boys, Told News Of The Area, “It was a fantastic day that was well organised, and kept all the kids engaged.”
“Special thanks to the Up&Up staff who interacted with the kids and the Medowie Lions Club for providing lunch.”
Jak Hunter a great time, excitedly telling News Of The Area, “Such an amazing day.”
“I enjoyed being recorded doing tricks on my scooter and seeing my name on the ramps when we spray painted them with the guys from UP&UP.”
Deputy Mayor Chris Doohan was in attendance for the day, and told News Of The Area, “What a fantastic day for the young people and families in our town.”
“It was great to see over 100 people joining in.”
“I’d love to see more individuals and groups interested in making sure more of this style of event happens more often,” he said.
