In a sea of colour, the characters leapt off the pages and sprung to life in a grand parade, as secondary students and staff kicked up their heels and shared their joy of reading.

The parade highlighted this year’s Book Week theme, Escape to Everywhere, with the hundreds of characters representing fact and fiction from across the globe.

Year 8 student, Jonathan Hawes, said his inventive costume was inspired by the character traits of Dobby from the Harry Potter series.

“I made my own costume using some wire, a paper bag and a sheet,” he said.

“Dobby is a great character, he is funny and has lots of creative story lines.”

The event was organised by Year 12 students, who took a break from their busy HSC preparations to show that you are never too old to share the fun of reading.

“There was a great vibe and everyone was having lots of fun talking about the characters and books,” Year 12 student Kaitlyn Gregory said.

“It was a nice way to relax and it shows the juniors just how much fun reading can be.”

Book Week, which runs from 19-26 August, is an initiative of the Children’s Book Council of Australia to celebrate the magic of introducing young minds to the adventures of reading.
