The nationwide event is to be held on Sunday March 5 and the theme is ‘Step up to clean up’.

The focus of this event is as much on preventing rubbish entering our environment as it is removing what has already accumulated.

Over the recent holiday period there has been a build up of unsightly rubbish, especially along roads where irresponsible people casually throw rubbish from their cars.

Site coordinator for the Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest clean up, Ken Paton OAM told NOTA, “Last year we collected half a truck full of rubbish.

“I would encourage people to recycle as much as possible, particularly through the earn and return scheme,” said Mr Paton.

This year rubbish will be collected in the area from the Hawks Nest Surf Club through to the industrial estate in Tea Gardens.

The main benefit besides the removal of rubbish is about building up the community.

“It’s about getting your community involved and creating networks,” said Mr Paton.

If you are interested in helping out, registration is 8.30am on 5 March opposite the Fire Station on Marine Drive where collection bags can be obtained.

This event will be followed by a sausage sizzle for the volunteers.
