The group of 24 Year 5 and 6 students demonstrated impressive skills throughout the full-day competition to claim the top spot ahead of seven other primary schools.

Year 5 student Isabella Sumner said, “It was a great day with lots of fun activities”.

“We all worked really well together, and we so excited when we won,” she said.

The Discovery Days are a joint project conducted by the University of Newcastle and MidCoast Community to foster an interest in Science, Engineering and other technology-related areas.

Isabella said the competition required the students to work in small teams to solve a series of hands-on challenges.

“I learnt there is a scientific principle behind every gadget and structure that we use,” she said.

Building and testing a catapult, bionic hand, bridge, earthquake-proof tower and powering an “Electra City” were amongst the challenges faced by the young engineers.

“I discovered triangles are the strongest shape to use when constructing things,” Nate Reitsma said.

“They don’t collapse as easily as other shapes because the weight is spread more evenly across all the sides,” Blake Matheson added.

The MidCoast Discovery program has been running since 2003 and has now grown to be the largest in NSW.

The program is supported by Zone 4 Rotary Clubs and sponsored by MidCoast Water.
