A fun day was had by young and old, despite terrible weather, at the celebration of the Centenary of Australia’s first flying squadrons.
The day began with an official ceremony for invited guests and members of the press, where the Governor-General, His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), as Commander-In-Chief, was welcomed as an honoured guest.
Guests were treated to a ceremonial parade and flypasts to mark this significant milestone in Army, Air Force and Australian Defence Force history.
Following the parade invited guests enjoyed a flying programme and static displays, which showcased historic warbirds and current Air Force aircraft in acknowledgement of the Squadrons’ rich history in flying combat.
Also attending the official part of this historic event were Number 1 Squadron personnel from RAAF Amberley and personnel from Numbers 2, 3 and 4 Squadrons, based at RAAF Williamtown, as well as Veterans and family members.
Outside the Williamtown RAAF Base gates, the roads were lined with cars, filled with families out to watch the fly overs and not at all perturbed by the weather conditions.
The RAAF Base and Fighterworld put on a great day of festivities and events to mark this special occasion, and they had a steady trade of passionate fans coming through the door.
Medowie mother of three, Renee Craddock, took her children to the celebrations and reported that the day was a wonderful success, and that there was something for everyone to do, and learn about.
Renee told News Of The Area, “They got to sit in a PC9 propeller fighter jet, sit in a F/A 18 classic hornet, climb in and through the tanks, sit on Quad bikes, play with the fire trucks and hoses, inspect unloaded guns, and so much more!”
“It was a wonderful family friendly celebration.”
