Foot pursuit results in arrest of alleged armed robber inner Newcastle

A man has been arrested and is expected to be charged over the armed robbery of a man and a woman in Newcastle yesterday.

About 2:20pm (Wednesday 10 September 2014), a man and a woman were walking along King Street when they were approached by a man holding a beer bottle.

He allegedly threw the bottle at the pair causing it to smash on the ground before grabbing part of the broken bottle threatening them and demanding their wallets and mobile phones.

The man complied with the demands and handed over his wallet and phone before their attacker ran off.

He gave chase and alerted nearby detectives to the incident. Members of the public also came to their aid and followed the man into a gym on Hunter Street.

The 30-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Newcastle Police Station. He was then taken to the John Hunter Hospital for treatment of an ankle injury sustained during the foot pursuit.

He remains in hospital under police guard and is expected to be charged upon his release. The stolen phone and wallet were also recovered during the incident.
