The mobile health check unit set up in the carpark of the Tea Gardens Library manned by Nurse Robert Woolley with members of the Myall Coast Rotary Club helping out as well.
“The response was terrific,” Rotary President Peter Sivyer told News Of The Area.
“Rob, the Nurse recorded 63 examinations, mostly men but apparently some ladies as well,” Roger Digby said.
“Rob was delighted by the response from such a small community as ours.”
‘MHERV’ as it’s called is a purpose built caravan that travels the state dropping into to regional and rural areas to test men for signs of ill health.
The statistics surrounding men’s health are not good.
Around 41,000 Australian men die each year from preventable disease, that’s four lives lost every hours and four families left to grieve forever.
The MHERV van, which is sponsored by Rotary, specifically targets towns where the average male population is aged 60 plus.
Health checks for blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar (diabetes) were carried out last week.
MHERV’s Operational Manger, Barry Knowles said, “The Mherv team has many times identified a life threatening condition and saved someone from an early death.”
