TIMES have certainly changed since the British tradition of High Tea began in the 1700s.

Back then, it was a meal served to the working class man between three and four o’clock and taken standing up, hence the term ‘high’.

It consisted of scones and cakes and maybe cheese and bread.

Over the centuries the upper class turned the ‘high tea’ into a meal to be served before the theatre or an evening out.

Thankfully, today we can all celebrate the joys of ‘high tea’ as they did recently at the Myall Community Arts and Craft Centre.

‘The guests of honour were around 40 consignees and volunteer workers who together contribute to the success of the Craft Centre Shop,” Janette Coppock told News Of The Area.

“It was a wonderful afternoon.’’

“The Centre was transformed, with tables topped with crisp white tablecloths, fine china, plates loaded with a selection of sandwiches and cakes, pots of tea and coffee, flowers and chocolates,” Janette said.

“A never ending supply of lucky door prizes kept everyone entertained throughout the afternoon.”

The ‘High Tea’ is an annual event at the Arts and Craft Centre, held as a thank you to the members and volunteers who enable the Craft Shop to open seven days a week.

“This year a new group of ladies took on the organisation and hosting of the High Tea, giving the previous hard working team the opportunity to enjoy the day as special guests.”

“All in all a very successful day, enjoyed by guests and workers alike.”
