Fr Brian Mascord was the parish priest at Nelson Bay for over five years, and he is still well regarded in the Bay community which he recently visited.

The Holy Father Pope Francis has appointed Fr Brian Mascord, currently the Vicar General of the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, the fifth Bishop of Wollongong.

Australian Catholic Bishops Conference president Archbishop Denis Hart said Bishop-Elect Mascord brings a wealth of experience in parish ministry, education, chaplaincy and governance.

“Fr Mascord has been a fine, hard-working parish priest for many years and will be a worthy Bishop of Wollongong. I congratulate him on his appointment on behalf of the Australian bishops,” Archbishop Hart said.

Father Brian Mascord Bishop Elect told News Of The Area, “As Bishop I will be responsible for leading the catholic community in Wollongong.”

He will be travelling to Rome in 2018 to undertake Bishop School and Fr Brian Mascod Bishop-Elect admitted that he will be doing his work for the Church in what can only be described as difficult times.

“The idea of being a bishop was quite strange to me as my role as a priest has been to serve the people, I will now be working with priests and allowing them to be of service to gods’ people and to encourage them,” he said.

In addition to parish appointments across many parts of the Diocese, Bishop-Elect Mascord has served as vocations director since 2007 and has been Vicar General since 2012.

He has been a long-standing member of the Council of Priests and is currently a member of the diocesan Clergy Life and Ministry Team and the National Council for Clergy Life and Ministry.

In announcing Bishop-Elect Mascord’s appointment, Pope Francis also accepted Bishop Ingham’s resignation.

The catholic community of the Bay will miss Fr Brian Mascord Bishop-Elect.
