Working incredibly hard Karla’s story is one to be proud of.

Born in May 1995, Karla is a fresh faced 22 year old.

She spent her childhood between Tanilba Bay and Singleton, leaving Hunter River High at 16 to start an apprenticeship.

Karla worked in a few local salons between Salamander and Nelson Bay before making the bold decision at 19 to make an interstate move.

She arranged an interview in a salon in Brisbane QLD, and was offered the job.

Karla packed up her life, and drove to Queensland to start the next chapter of her career.

She told News Of The Area, “I loved it so much, the salon I worked at was amazing and I loved everyone.”

“Finding a salon you love and where you get along with everyone is quite rare these days, so I was very lucky.”

Even though Karla enjoyed her work there, she was homesick without her family, and only knowing a handful of people outside of work.

She ended up quite sick, and found herself in hospital, which was her wake up call that she needed to be closer to family.

Karla did some bar work locally while looking for the right salon that she would love working at.

She found that perfect place in Headz Up Hairdressing in Medowie.

After 18 months of working, the option came up for Karla to buy the salon.

Karla said, “I was only 21 at this stage, so I was afraid people would look at me and think ‘oh she’s too young and she wouldn’t know what she’s doing’, but I decided to take a chance and turn my dreams into reality.”

“I was forced to grow up quite fast and get my priorities straight, as the Salon had to become the number one priority over anything else.”

“I don’t have children, so I think that’s a big advantage for me, as I can stay back any night of the week and accommodate all my working clients that can’t make our usual hours,” she said.

Karla has now owned Headz Up Hairdressing for 18 months and has turned it into a beautiful salon.

Staff include Fabian, the Barber in shop; apprentice Kacee Bessant; nail technician Karen Bennett; and three senior stylists including Karla, Jade Struck, and Jess Wilson.

Karla told News Of The Area that it was hard going at the start.

“For the first ten months of owning, I was the only person working it, six days a week and over 45+ hours.”

“But I stuck it out because I knew eventually it was going to become easier, I just had to build up a clientele and the reputation of the salon within the community.”

“The salon and I have come so far, and I couldn’t be prouder of my amazing team and support people around me,” she said.

“I plan on being here for a long time coming,” she added.

Karla’s next dream is to buy another salon.

She said, “It’s not just a job, it’s my passion and my dream come true. If you want something so bad, just go for it.”

“Nothing is ever impossible, you just have to want it bad enough to make it happen.”
