The Annual District Convention will be held at Club Lemon Tree and is an important event, allowing Lions, Leos and their partners and friends to come together to decide the direction of the District, hear interesting and inspiring Guest Speakers, and catch up and socialise with old friends.

The Convention hasn’t been held in the Port Stephens area for a number of years and this year will be the 60th Annual Convention for this District.

Lions Clubs were founded in 1917 and Australian Lions Clubs commenced in Lismore in Northern NSW in 1947, with Lionism celebrating 75 years in Australia last year.

This year has also seen important anniversaries for Lions Clubs in this District, with Cessnock, the first Lions Club in the District celebrating 70 years. The Lions Club of Medowie are the proud host of the District Convention after celebrating their 40th Anniversary in March.

Attendees at this year’s convention will also be treated to a special rendition of our National Anthem, sung in both English and Gathang by local Worimi young lady, Maddie Lilley who is currently completing her HSC.

“This is the time when all of our amazing lions gather to review the service to their communities of the past year, and plan for their future service,” District Governor Peter Francis said.

2023 District Convention Chair Brenda Scarfi said, “Lions Club members are not just there to cook BBQs, but are there in times of natural disasters and tragedies.

“They provide support and fundraising in their communities for local projects and raise money for causes such as research for Childhood Cancer and Diabetes.

“Local Lions Clubs are always interested in talking to potential new members. If people are interested, then they should contact their local Lions Club to find out more.”
