Man charged following intimidation and assault incident in Newcastle

Police from Newcastle City have charged a man following an intimidation and assault incident that occurred in Newcastle overnight.

About 7pm (Monday 6 October, 2014) a 26-year-old woman was driving her vehicle on Smith Street with her mother in the front passenger seat.

It’s alleged a man approached the vehicle that was stationary in traffic and began yelling abusive and intimidating comments before punching the driver’s side mirror.

The woman was able to drive a short distance in an attempt to get away from the man but he allegedly followed, continuing to threaten the women.

A number of people who were nearby witnessed the incident and went to the aid of the two women.

It’s alleged the man punched one of the witnesses before running from the location.

Police were called and an investigation was commenced.

A 27-year-old man was arrested a short distance away and was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with intimidation (x2), assault, larceny (x2) and malicious damage.

He has been bail refused to appear in Newcastle Local Court today.
