Nine year old Joshua recently represented Medowie Christian School at the Combined Independent School Diving Championships, where he placed second and was selected to represent the Combined Independent Schools at the Primary Schools Sports Association (PSSA) State Championships. At PSSA, Joshua placed third and has been selected to represent NSW at the Pacific School Games which will be held in Adelaide from 1 – 10 December. Joshua also competed at the State Age Championships in Sydney where he competed in the 11 years and under 1m springboard and received the gold medal. He only started diving 18 months ago at a diving holiday camp at Abbotsleigh in Sydney. When in Sydney, he is coached by Rebecca Manuel (nee Gilmore) who won a bronze medal at the 2000 Olympic Games. Over the summer he trains with Hunter United Diving Academy at Lambton Pool with coach Jie Tang, who was both an athlete and coach in China, before moving to Australia in 2011. Mr Tang told News Of The Area, “Josh is a very talented diving and gymnastics athlete. He has the much needed height and body shape for diving and he is very willing to strive to meet the requirements of all the discipline requires.” “At nine years old Josh is too young and inexperienced for the next Olympic Games.” “But in 2024 he will be 16 years old, and in 2028 he will be 22, which is the golden age for an Olympic diver,” Mr Tang said. “We will work hard over the next three years to lay the basic skills and work towards a bright future.” Ms Manuel, Joshua’s Sydney coach, told News Of The Area, “Josh is a fantastic talent and could have a real future in diving.” “I am excited to see how he performs at his first major event in December.” Joshua still trains and competes in gymnastics, and is competing at Level 5 this year. News Of The Area wishes Joshua all the best with his sporting endeavours, and will keep up to date with his achievements.
