MidCoast residents have their say on rate rise proposal

However, it could become unfair on former Great Lakes residents who are paying the highest rates in the MidCoast area. I do believe we need to embrace the rises as best we can, as long as the money goes towards improved services and infrastructure. The rate rises need to be reasonable and honest. If we expect improved services, we should expect a rate rise.

The proposed rise may not seem much, but when you combine it with water rates, a lot of properties are looking at three grand per year now, about $60 per week, it may be a bit of a struggle for pensioners. Any money from a rate rise needs to go into our roads, facilities and bridges.

Photo 5: Kim Kirkpatrick, Tea Gardens. I am against a rate rise. I feel our rates are high enough at the moment, considering what we actually get for our rates. We do need a lot of resources in this area, but I am not sure that a rate rise will benefit our area.

Photo 6: David Mort, Bulahdelah. When you’re looking at people who buy property, any rate increase could affect their decision to buy here. Any increase in rates should be used to improve our infrastructure, and the rates should be evened out across the whole council area.
