Last season the Nelson Bay Makos cricket club fielded seven junior teams plus the Milo’s (5-8 years girls and boys).

This season the club is looking to add at least one, possibly two, teams by competing in the Newcastle girls cricket league in the 13 and 16 years age groups. It will be the first time the club has fielded a girls-only team.

Coach and committee member Wayne Banks said recruitment for girls aged up to 16 years had already begun in earnest.

“We have a number of girls already registered and are recruiting for female cricketers interested in joining a team,” he said.

“There are no requirements and girls do not have to have had any previous experience, they are welcome to come along and give it a try.

“The club will be supplying all the gear, including bats, balls, pads and helmets, however we would also like to hear from local businesses interested in sponsoring the team shirts.

“The club has some excellent sponsors on board, led by the Soldiers Point Bowling Club, and with the ever growing numbers playing the game is looking to broaden those numbers.”

The girls’ competition features a modified T20 9-a-side game to be played on a Friday evening in Hamilton from 20 October to 8 December.

Training will be held at the Salamander sporting complex cricket nets.

Makos club secretary Matt Brealey said that registrations for boys and girls, juniors and seniors had opened for the 2017/18 season.

To register interested players could email the club on nelsonbaycc@gmail.com or go the club’s Facebook page.
