MORE than 200 lady golfers, representing 29 golf clubs from Metropolitan Sydney and various rural areas of NSW, descended on Nelson Bay for the 2-day Veteran Women Country Tournament on 18 and 19 May.

Sponsored by Veteran Women Golfers’ Association of NSW, this prestigious event is held annually in nominated country areas.

Due to the popularity of Port Stephens, Nelson Bay Golf Club was elected to host the 2017 event and, emphasising this point, entries closed in a matter of weeks.

The format was an Individual Stableford on the Thursday, with a 4BBB on the Friday.

The Winners on Thursday were: Division 1 Loraine Sladden, Wakehurst; Division 2 Margaret Oakley, Shelley Beach; Division 3 Rhonda Barbat, Shelley Beach.

In the 4BBB event, the Diamond Jubilee Perpetual Trophy was won by Barbara Clark and Deborah Campbell, both Members of Castle Hill Country Club.

“With our new club house nearing completion it is envisaged that this will be the first of several such events to be held bringing many visitors to the Port Stephens region, not only to play golf on our beautiful courses but to enjoy all the facilities that our blue water paradise has to offer,” Anne Peterson, Lady Veterans Delegate, said.

Lyn Walker, President of the VWGA of NSW, added, “The course looked beautiful, in the sunshine, on the Thursday.”

“The experience of playing in this setting with the wildlife and the native bush is an appealing prospect for those who normally play on a city-linked course. The rain on the Friday was unfortunate but didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the ladies for the event and the Golf Course.”
