At the Zoo, the Blue Mountains Bushwalk with its towering sandstone walls and limpid pools is home to about 50 of the tiny black and gold birds, along with over 20 other species from endangered Brush-tailed Rock-wallabies to Dollar Birds and Turtles. This beautiful exhibit is like a slice of the Blue Mountains bush transported to Taronga and even features modern Aboriginal rock art and a tumbling waterfall. The Regent Honeyeaters are one of the Zoo’s Centenary Legacy species which Taronga is committing to support for the next 10 Years. They will also be breeding more Regent Honeyeaters to be released next year at Chiltern in Victoria. Mornings are a great time to see the birds as they swoop through the bush in the exhibit, where the famous dinosaur tree, the Wollemi Pine, also grows along the cliffs. Taronga’s new Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat joey, Kibbar, can be seen at Backyard to Bush nearby, occasionally exploring outside her night den. There are over 30 free keeper talks and presentations including Taronga’s famous Seal and Free-flight Birds presentations, along with taking a ride on the Sky Safari cable car to get a bird’s eye view of the Zoo and Sydney Harbour.
