Chris Kelly, president of the Port Stephens chapter of Men Of League, told News Of The Area, “We raise money for welfare and education, for past players, wives and their families.”

“Men of League is a registered charity with the NRL providing administrative support, so that all the funds we raise go straight into welfare outcomes for people who are a part of the rugby league family.”

“It’s called Men of League but it’s very much about the women and families and we encourage ladies to participate as well.”

“It’s a real grassroots effort, we help the ladies that have served in the kiosks, as well as helping young players that have put their careers on hold while they pursue the sport, making sure that they have a positive future” he said.

The Port Stephens Men of League have purchased wheelchairs, converted vehicles and remodeled houses to help members of the local rugby league community.

The Men Of League fundraising event will kick off with a dinner on Saturday night, 5 August, in the brand new Nelson Bay Golf Clubhouse.

Attendees will enjoy a two-course meal, with MC, retired ABC sport commentator Gerry Collins, guest speakers including football great David Cement Gillespie, and there will be entertainment with the Hummingbirds show band.

Tickets are $50 each, and bookings can be made at the golf club.

This will be followed on Sunday, 6 August, with a four-person Ambrose golf event at Nelson Bay Golf course with shotgun start at 10am.
Golfer Nikki Garrett will be playing.

Teams of four are welcome with breakfast and registration starting at 9am.

Bookings are essential by ringing the club on 4981 1132 or Men of League President Chris Kelly on 0418 652 857.
There are 43 branches of Men of League in New South Wales with more in Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
