BEAUTIFUL weather greeted competitors at the Mid North Coast Branch Championships held over the weekend of 18 and 19 February at South West Rocks.

Surf Life Saving Clubs from as far south as Camden Haven and as far north as Macksville/Scotts Head contested the event, with competitors from under 8s to over 60s hitting the water for Surf Ski, Boards, Swimming, Wade Races, Beach Sprints and Flags events.

News Of The Area spoke with Rod McDonagh, President of Surf Life Saving Mid North Coast and the South West Rocks SLSC.

”It’s been a good carnival so far with all the junior events held on Saturday morning, with a very good roll up of junior competitors, with strong competition in great conditions on the water,” Rod said.

”The afternoon programme has the open and masters events, which has plenty of keen competition,
with the conditions on the water getting a bit tricky with the strong nor’easter blowing in.

“The Beach events are run on Sunday morning with the traditional March Past and Beach Sprint and Flag events going ahead.”

Slyvia Hudson from the Macksville/Scotts Head S.L.S.C. was in attendance, supporting the junior club representatives in their events.

”The club has three competitors today,” Sylvia said.

“Matilda Bucholz in the U/8s, Zali Meichan in the U/12s and Steve Hudson in the Masters division, over 60s.”

Matilda Bucholz took first place in the U/8s Wade race, while Zali Meichen was second in the Iron Person event and second in the Board race.

Steve Hudson placed second in the Swim race and second in the Board race.

Sylvia said attendance at the Club’s Nippers events has been strong, with the youngsters “really enjoying their time on the beach”.

”The numbers are up on previous years with a lot more younger children participating in the Nippers.”

The Macksville/Scotts Head Club currently has seven patrols, and are always looking for new members to join up and do their Bronze Medallion certification.
