2 August

It was back to winter today when 49 players ventured forth for the usual Wednesday Nominated Triples competition.

It was nice to get back on the grass.

It was running very true but a tad slow at about 12 seconds.

Like good wine it will improve with time.

Bowlers were playing for the monthly Queen’s Kitchen draw for the first time.

Winning both their matches was the team of Mark Nightingale, Doug Naylor and Merv Mills.

It was great to see mark back bowling and the Club welcomed back Merv Mills from an extended holiday.

There will be no bowls next Wednesday as bowlers will be saying their farewells to Kerry O’Brien.

After having wonderful fields in the Fabulous Friday Open Jackpot Pairs, the turnout today was disappointing.

A fierce westerly wind probably kept the faint-hearted away but 12 hearty souls braved the conditions and played.

Bill Moon and Ken Devlin combined to have the highest winning margin.

Vic Garlick and Col Saillard posted a good win and in the remaining game Lynda Richards combined with Bill Whalan to also have a convincing win.

The jackpot, such as it is, was not won.

The Sunday Mixed Bowlers probably had the pick of the weather this week and 22 players enjoyed a great morning with little wind until late into their game.

There were three games of Triples and one of Pairs with the winners decided by the smallest margin.

The winners were Ann Remment, (welcome Ann), Lynda Richards and Denis Wilberforce with margin of 3.

Runners-up with a margin of 5 were John Atherton, Paul Hadfield and Lon Richards.

In other news;

The Mixed Pairs competition this year has attracted a good field of players with at least 18 teams so far entered.

This year the competition will be played over 18 ends and will be a 3-bowl format.

Competition commences on Saturday 19 August.

The Club has entered one team in the Three x Three Newcastle District mid-week competition commencing at the end of the month.

The Selectors will be planning some trial games before the final team will be decided.

It is expected that these trials will be played on a Saturday.

At a special meeting of the Management Committee of the Club, popular bowler and long-time resident of Tea Gardens, Max Stephens, was elected President of the Men’s Bowling Club after the sad and untimely passing of Kerry O’Brien.

Congratulations, Max.
