9 September

The semi-finals of the Club Mixed Pairs competition was played today with a tricky wind blowing in from the south.

In one match, the team of Jill McBride and Noel Jackson played Verlie Gray and Tom Parkinson and in the other Kaylene and Greg Pearson opposed Bette and Col Saillard.

Verlie and Tom were slow out of the blocks with their challenge beginning at the 6th end when they picked up a 5 and at the halfway mark the teams were locked at 11-11.

In a dramatic finish Verlie and Tom powered away over the last 5 ends to post a convincing win 24-13.

In the remaining game Bette and Col trailed 5-12 at the halfway mark with the turning point being at the 11th end when they picked up a 4.

Somehow, Kaylene and Greg were stuck on 13 and Bette and Col played some text-book draw bowls winning all the remaining ends and booking a place in the final.

They ran out winners 20-13.

10 September

A nice field of 20 players attended Sunday mixed bowls today.

A welcome was extended to a new player, Peter Cheney.

The winners were Dianne Kiss, Mark Nightingale and Dennis Wilberforce.

The Lucky losers were Bev Dunn, John Moore, Gary Wynne and Karen McPhie.

Cooks were Barry Goode and Ron Webster.

The final of the Club Mixed Pairs competition was played today in ideal conditions with super veterans Verlie Gray and Tom Parkinson taking on the new “kids on the block”, Bette and Col Saillard.

Verlie and Tom developed an early lead and it was not until the 10th end that Bette and Col drew level.

Consistent draw bowling paid dividends for Bette and Col and they ran out winners 17-12.

With a total age of 163 years, Verlie and Tom are inspirational in reaching the finals.

A fabulous effort!

Congratulations to all the players on a wonderful competition with Bette and Col deserved winners.

The organisers would also like to thank John Younghusband for umpiring during the weekend.
