15 February

At last some beautiful summer weather to enjoy the great game of Lawn Bowls.

A maximum field of 54 players took advantage of the conditions and came out ready to play.

The popular formula of 20 points for the win and 1 for each end won saw four teams vying for the prize money.

On a four-way countback the winners were Peter Gurney, Ken Devlin, Col Amos and Mark Hair.

The runners-up also on a countback, were Geoff Hamilton, a visitor from Turramurra, Garry Porter, Col Saillard and Ross Barry.

 

17 February

Conditions for bowls were great today; if not a tad warm, when 22 bowlers contested the Fabulous Friday Open Jackpot Pairs.

There were four games of Pairs and one game of Triples played.

It was nice to see some support from our lady bowlers, always welcome!

The winners today with the highest winning margin were Ross Barry and Greg Pearson.

They were closely followed by the triples combination of Gary Wynne, Vic Garlick and Danny Johnson.

The Jackpot was not won and will stand at $100 when play resumes next Friday.

 

18 February

The first round of the Club Minor Singles Championship was played today and it was pleasing to see some new bowlers competing, many playing their first ever singles match.

The results were Bill Heylbut defeated Denis Wilberforce 31-12.

David Garcia defeated Steve Jones 31-22.

Peter Gurney was too consistent for Lon Richards winning 31-7.

Anthony Grant had a tough match with Vic Garlick winning 31-27.

Graeme Watkins had a great win over the valiant Gary Wynne 31-26.

Ken Devlin accounted for Doug Andrews 31-21.

A second round match was also played with Luke Gliwa having a battle to defeat Col Saillard 31-26.

 

19 February

Sunday bowlers had a roll-up today with many regular players being absent.

The second round of the Club Minor Singles Championship was played in very overcast and threatening conditions.

Bill Haylbut continued on his winning way defeating David Garcia 31-24.

Peter Gurney, displaying some deft touch, accounted for Anthony Grant 31-11.

Ken Devlin was in fine form defeating Graeme Watkins 31-15.

Max Stephens had too many shots winning comfortably against Ray Prigg 31-9.

Ross Barry had a tough fight early in the game eventually winning 31-19 against a stoic Garry Porter 31-19.

Doug Naylor is through to the third round after being awarded a forfeit.

The Noel Jackson, Stewart Sturrock match has reached an interesting stage with Noel leading 20-5 at one stage before a great come-back from Stewart.

Their game had to be abandoned, due to lightning, and at that stage Noel had a narrow lead 24-21.

 

In other news:   

Tea Gardens Bowling Club has several entries in the forthcoming Newcastle District Pairs Championship and one entry in the State Senior Pairs.

Greg Pearson and Steve Pell will play at Beresfield next weekend in the State Senior Pairs and Jeff Baker and Paul Syron, Sean Mearrick and Richard Lee together with Ross Barry and Danny Johnson will play in the District Pairs at Nelson Bay.
