August is National Family History month, and the group wants to encourage the community to join them in discovering more about their own family history.

“We have everything covered to support you in uncovering the stories of your relatives and highlight the benefits and joy of family,” the Research Groups Anne Shannon said.

“The month commenced with a workshop where members were encouraged to write just one page about an event in their lives, putting pen to paper is the place to start,” Anne said.

The Group is also hosting a very special talk from author, Trevor Edmonds on Monday 20 August at 11am.

“Trevor’s topic is ‘The Greatest act of Bravery on Australian Soil, the 1905 Thornton Railway Accident,” Anne said.

Trevor Edmonds’ talk will focus on William (Bill) Pearce who’s courage under extreme conditions averted what could have been an horrific train crash on the tracks between Maitland and Newcastle.

There’s no cost to anyone who wants to attend the talk.
