Great Lakes Council is currently undertaking work to reconstruct a section of The Lakes Way through the village of Bungwahl.

The work involves upgrading a 600m length of The Lakes Way with significant improvements to the road width, drainage, pavement condition and lighting.

Mr Ron Hartley, Council’s Director of Engineering Services said, “Previously the road pavement at this location was in poor condition with inadequate provisions for drainage.”

The work will also see an improvement to the standard of the intersection at Seal Rocks Road.

“The intersection of The Lakes Way with Seal Rocks Road did not meet current design standards presenting a safety issue at this location, particularly during holiday periods when traffic volumes increase significantly,” said Mr Hartley.

Council’s Tuncurry Depot Operations staff are undertaking the construction project.

Council’s Operations Manager, Mr Robert Fish said, “work is progressing well with substantial earthworks, drainage, road pavement and lighting work already undertaken”.

“To enable the works to progress the road is under alternate traffic flow conditions during working hours. Motorists are urged to exercise caution when driving through the work site and to abide by roadwork speed limits in place,” said Mr Fish.

Initial work has largely focused on the length of the project north of Seal Rocks Road.

“The section of the road north of Seal Rocks Road is expected to have a bitumen seal applied mid-October weather permitting. All work is expected to be completed in November,” said Mr Fish.

“The work is being undertaken through Council’s Regional Road Construction program with funding provided from Roads and Maritime Services Repair Program and Regional Roads, Block Grant. Great Lakes Council has an ongoing commitment to upgrade The Lakes Way, and further work on The Lakes Way in Bungwahl is expected to be undertaken in the 2016/17 financial year,” said Mr Hartley.

Mr Bromhead said council is upgrading 600 metres of The Lakes Way with significant improvements to the road alignment, drainage and pavement condition through funding provided by the NSW Government’s Roads and Maritime Services and Regional Road Block Grants programs.

Member for Myall Lakes Stephen Bromhead said, “The work by Great Lakes Council shows how well an upgrade can be undertaken on a busy stretch of road by engineers who know and understand the engineering and geo-technical works required to build a good road.”

“The previous road pavement at this location was in poor condition with inadequate drainage and I am pleased that the new design includes improvements at the intersection at Seal Rocks Road,” he said.
