First established in 1982, the library is managed by Port Stephens Council and staffed by a group of dedicated volunteers.

Council’s Library Services Manager Kris Abbott says these renovations will reinvigorate this important community service.

“The renovation of Tilligerry Community Library is much-needed and well overdue. This service has been a valued part of the local community for 37 years, so it’s certainly in need of some TLC.

“The library was originally furnished with donated second-hand shelving, bookcases, desks, furniture and curtains. It was even decorated with paintings and photos donated by the local community.

“Port Stephens Council has been successful in receiving funding from the Australian Government’s Stronger Communities Program. This grant, together with funds from Port Stephens Council, will enable us to complete the refurbishment.

“The makeover will include internal painting, new shelving, furniture and fittings. Most importantly, it will include a new range of items for loan, which have been donated by our three other Port Stephens Library branches.

“Port Stephens Council is proud of Tilligerry Community Library and the team of dedicated volunteers who keep it running.

“As well as a place to borrow books, the library is also a place where the community can come together, have a chat and catch up on what’s going on. This makeover is a small way that we can say thank you and show the local community we care,” Ms Abbott said.

About Tilligerry Community Library

The library was first established in 1982 as the Tilligerry Deposit Station in a small room in the then Tilligerry Community Centre. In 1997, it moved to its current location in Meredith Street, Lemon Tree Passage. In 2000, it changed its name to the Tilligerry Community Library. The library is currently open 2 hours a day, Monday to Saturday. The library is well used and loans over 1,000 items per month.
