Spirits were high among great atmosphere, lots of laughs and very clever people testing their knowledge last Saturday night at the Karuah RSL Trivia Night held for the Key Word Sign Workshop to be held in Karuah early next month for school staff from Karuah and surrounding community schools.

The free KWS workshop will be held to assist those who would benefit from learning how to communicate with non-verbal children, this will improve staff skills immensely and definitely benefit the children.

Organiser’s Ken and Olivia Hurstfield who are advocates for their son Levi told Myall Coast News, “Originally dating back to 1970’s from the Makaton language, Key Word Sign’s were designed as a means of communication using basic one sign word gestures and symbols to help break the communication barrier for children and adults struggling with all types of challenges that hold them back from getting their point across.”

The Trivia Night was deemed a success with approximately $1500 funds raised from the night, including raffle tickets, a silent auction on a Newcastle Knights Jersey, an auction on a XXXX beer esky with Dan Murphy’s voucher, all prize money won on the night was generously donated back and all proceeds go to paying for the KWS Workshop, any funds leftover will go to Karuah Public School.

Mr and Mrs Hurstfield also said, “We would like to thank everyone for coming, the many local and surrounding businesses for all of their donations, Karuah RSL for holding the event and to Ross Parr for coming in during his holidays to host the event.”

Karuah RSL Manager Ross Parr said, “I’d like to thank everyone for coming, Olivia for putting on a great night, and if any group in the area would like to have any sort of charity event or trivia night, we would be more than happy to host it free of charge.”
