Winda Woppa overcrowding leads to serious traffic violations

During the October Long Weekend, The Anchorage’s two-way traffic was squeezed into a one-way bottleneck by illegally parked cars.

PARKING around Winda Woppa is about to get hairy again, if the October Long Weekend was any indication.

During the Labour Day holiday, The Anchorage and The Boulevarde, the key beachside roads along Jimmys Beach at Winda Woppa, became a hazardous bumper-to-bumper parking lot, with cars lining the un-guttered roads, many opting to create their own parking spaces illegally upon nature strips and even in the middle of the road to avoid sand.

Certain points along both The Anchorage, the only road in or out of the peninsula, became uncontrolled one-way choke points, bottlenecking the area and denying possible emergency access.

MidCoast Council has attempted to stem the sand-blown problems along The Boulevarde, with recent clearing operations taking place.

“MidCoast Council have been working with the Winda Woppa Preservation Association for the last two years reviewing traffic arrangements in this peninsula,” a Council spokesperson told NOTA.

“As a result, we have increased signposting and pavement markings to highlight the one-way direction of The Boulevarde.”

“Following further discussions in September, a ‘No Stopping’ zone was installed on The Anchorage, opposite Jimmys Beach carpark to stop vehicles parking on this sweeping bend, where motorists would previously park with parts of the vehicle sticking out onto the road.

“There are a number of issues at play here as residents may not be supportive of parking signs along the beachfront due to the visual impact, and with already limited parking areas, visitors need spaces to park.”

Council says the Winda Woppa Preservation Association have not requested additional parking restrictions in the Winda Woppa area, but as congestion in popular seaside areas is difficult to control, motorists may ignore parking signs, and this then becomes an enforcement issue.
