WORLD Day of Prayer is a global ecumenical movement of prayer and prayerful action. It has a long history beginning in the 19th Century and involves people in an annual common day of Prayer in over 170 countries on the first Friday of March.

Each year’s worship has a special theme this year’s being prepared by an ecumenical committee in a different country.

In this way those who take part in the services come to know people of other countries, cultures and languages and have the opportunity to appreciate the joys, concerns and needs of other particular peoples.

In 2018 that prayerful support will be directed at the 540,000 inhabitants of the Republic of Suriname, on the north-eastern coast of South America.

Despite a history steeped in slavery and political coups, this tiny nation has achieved remarkable progress since its independence in 1975.Suriname enjoys multi-ethnicity and biodiversity, freedom of religion, free primary and secondary education, and free medical care for children and seniors.

Local men and Women are invited to join in prayer for the needs of Suriname and its people at the World Day of Prayer service, Friday 2nd March 1.30pm St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Witt Street Tea Gardens, where each of our churches will participate in this annual colourful and exciting service with the theme: “All Creation is Good”.

The Bulahdelah Service will be held on the 2nd of March at the Uniting Church at 7pm. Meredyth Rae will be speaking.
