FOR many young girls, long hair and ponytails are a dream come true, with great courage often needed for the long locks to be cut.
But for six-year-old Kirra-Lea Rooney, making the decision to have her ponytail chopped off to help young cancer patients was an easy one to make.
The Bulahdelah youngster said she instantly decided to donate her hair after visiting people in hospital with her mother.
“I saw lots of children with no hair and I just wanted them to have some of mine,” Kirra-Lea said.
“I really like long hair because I can swing it around and it makes me feel like a Princess, but there are some girls who need it more than I do.”
Kirra-Lea said she has been growing her hair for the past three years and is preparing to have at least 45cms of her ponytail lopped off in April.
Her hair will then be sent to Variety–The Children’s Charity to be made into a wig.
As well as donating her hair, Kirra-Lea also wants to raise $1000 to help provide wigs and vital equipment to children in need.
Kirra-Lea’s parents Nathan and Melissa, said they are very proud of their daughter’s selfless nature.
“She has the biggest heart of any six-year-old we’ve met,” Melissa said.
“To think she is doing this just because she wants to help other people, makes us a very proud Mum and Dad.”
A fundraising page has been created for Kirra-Lea with all proceeds going directly to the Children’s Charity.
