Additional charges have been laid after a fatal crash at Salamander Bay

Police have laid five additional charges over a crash at Salamander Bay earlier this year, in which two people died.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of George and Soldiers Point Roads at Salamander Bay about 1am on Friday 13 April 2018, after reports a Mazda 3 hatchback left the road and hit a tree. 

A passenger, a 34-year-old man, died at the scene. A second passenger, a 29-year-old man, was treated but died en route to hospital.

The driver, a 31-year-old man, sustained serious injuries. A third passenger, a 31-year-old man, sustained minor injuries. Both men were taken to John Hunter Hospital.

On Friday 20 April 2018, the driver was charged with two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous, cause bodily harm by misconduct in charge of motor vehicle, and negligent driving occasioning death.

At Newcastle Local Court today (Wednesday 15 August 2018), the driver was charged with additional offences of:

  • Aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death (PCA) (x2);
  • Dangerous driving occasioning death – drive under influence (x2); and
  • Drive with illicit drug in blood.

He will next appear at Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday 17 October 2018.
