With the approval of the RSL, Librarians Carol Johnson and Chris Shelly took a large group of children on a trip down memory lane, to a time when Australia was at war more than a century ago.

The school holiday activity was all about creating a ‘care package’ as if it was the year 1915 and the youngsters were sending it to a brother, father or family member serving on the front line.

“The children wrote a letter, as well as making a red poppy and adding things that our service men and women would have needed in the trenches,” Carol Johnson.

Some of those things included, toothpaste, soap, a bar of chocolate and of course Anzac biscuits.

The care packages were all wrapped as if to be sent, and then the best part was the children got to open them again.

“It was good to be able to experience what life was like in World War One,” Sophie said.

But all agreed they wouldn’t want to have lived a century ago, “It would have been a tough life,” Maya said.

The school holiday activity was just one of the many events held on a regular basis at the Tea Gardens Library.

Coming up on Friday 4 May from 2pm to 3.pm is a book talk and signing with Author Kim Hodges.

Kim’s ‘Girl Over The Edge’ is a raw and confronting account of mental illness and recovery.

Bookings are advised and can be made at midcoastlibraries.com.au
