Based on true events, ‘The Skinny Girl’ is a thought-provoking novel about a victim of emotional abuse, how attitudes, values and culture contribute to abuse, and the path to change.

Author Steve Matthews says the novel shines a light on domestic violence.

“Many people assume that victims of domestic violence and abuse are identified by their black eyes or broken arms.

The Skinny Girl allows readers to walk a mile in Daisy’s shoes,” Mr Matthews said.

‘The Skinny Girl’ was written over 6 years and involved many interviews with female victims of domestic abuse.

Through Daisy’s life, readers see that there can be hope while being exposed to the powerful, raw truth about what is a hidden subject.

“The story is not just about abuse; it is as much to do with a woman’s emotional strength, courage and empowerment,” Mr Matthews added.

Council’s Library Services Manager, says though the issue of domestic violence can be confronting, it’s an important discussion to have.

“Domestic violence is often seen as a taboo subject, but Steve Matthews’ book gives us an opportunity to understand Daisy’s experiences and talk about how culture and attitudes can be harmful,” Ms Abbott said.

Copies of ‘The Skinny Girl’ will be available for sale at the libraries on the day and all proceeds will be donated to the Homicide Victims Support Group and other local domestic violence charities.
