The theme this year was ‘escape to everywhere’, encouraging children to lose themselves in the love of reading,
immersing themselves in the characters and storylines, escaping to far away places.

Book Week is a nationwide initiative of the Children’s Book Council of Australia and brings children and books together to celebrate a love of literature.

Across Port Stephens this week schools, preschools, libraries, booksellers, authors and illustrators came together for Book Week activities.

There were parades galore, book signings with local authors, reading time sessions and ‘rug and read’ events at local schools encouraging families and community members to sit with children over morning tea in the school yard and read together.

Medowie grandparent Alicia Madden, told News Of The Area, “It was lovely attending the book week parade this year, and watching children be excited about books.”

“It was special watching the children truly take on their characters, and proudly telling their friends and teachers all about their book, and why they chose it.”

“Literature is to be loved by all, and book week ensure that love will always be encouraged,” she said.

Another special aspect to book week is the announcement of the Children’s Book Council of Australia National award winners, as it gives a wonderful list of books for families to look up for their children to increase their love of learning.

Families are encouraged to seek out some new books to read by having a browse through this winners, via the Children’s Book Council website on https://cbca.org.au/.
