Port Stephens Mayor Ryan Palmer was on hand to cut the ribbon and take the first shot off the tee in what can be considered a difficult and challenging hole to play.

Horizons Director Bob Westbury told News Of The Area, “It is an over water championship drive off the tee with a right to left signature.”

He believes it is possible for A grade players to reach the green from their drive.

“While it is a hole that A Grade Players will find challenging, it is still comfortable for ladies to reach in two shots.”

Horizons Golf Resort has a proud history of having hosted International Competitions and the ninth was used as the final hole for these events.

“The first of the ANZ professional players to take on the hole loved it, as some of them were able to reach the hole with their drive,” he said.

The hole was taken on by the Port Stephens Mayor, Ryan Palmer after the ribbon cutting who made a good show of landing near the green.

In opening the hole the Mayor stood shoulder to shoulder, with past Port Stephens Mayor Bob Westbury, members of Horizons Golf Resort, and the team from Latitude One, over 55’s Lifestyle Village who are sponsoring an upcoming event at the course and the staff of Horizons.

Cr Palmer told News Of The Area, “It was an honour to be the first ball off the tee on this magnificent hole.”

He believes that of all the holes in Port Stephens this would have to be one of the most challenging and spectacular.

“I try to play as much as I can fit in, however that is not always as often as I like, given my new role and family commitments,” he said.

Peter Rickard of Horizons Golf Resort has had a busy year with the renovations.

“We are really proud to see the results of the major works which we have undertaken including the rebuilding of the green and fairway on the ninth,” he said.

“In the last 12 months Horizons has invested over $500,000 in the course, including the renovations to the ninth and the installation of a new watering and pumping system.”

The Horizons Cafe and Bar and Function Centre has also seen work in recent months, with renovations and a new menu on offer.

The Bistro is now open on Friday nights.

The Latitude One Real Futures Foundation’s Inaugural Charity Golf Day is being hosted at Horizons Golf Resort on Friday 20 October and other major charity events have been successfully hosted at the course recently including a recent Camp Quality event.

The management and staff of Horizons Golf Resort are inviting people to drop by and explore what the facility has to offer to golfers, residents and visitors.
