“We are only in our second year and are a very small club, so this is a great boost to help set us up,” Team manager Erin Matheson said.

Holden’s national funding program has been running since 2014 with the aim of distributing funds to grassroots community-based sporting clubs.

Newcastle Holden Sales Manager Alan Curtis said the local cricket club was one of 25 organisations awarded a grant in the latest funding round.

“Initiatives like this are important to support kids sport, that’s why Holden gets behind it,” Mr Curtis told News of The Area.

“It is good to help kids get active and outside exercising.”

The new junior cricket team is competing in the Manning River District competition this year and recently celebrated their very first win.

“You probably could have heard them all over Bulahdelah, they were very excited with the win,” Erin said.

“They have such enthusiasm, they are very encouraging to each other and winning a game has definitely spurred them on.”

Erin said the grant will be used to purchase new equipment for both training and competition matches.
